Here's Ours.....
During my 17 years as a devoted home school mom, I started noticing small challenges with a few of my children. Nothing too severe in my mind, but as the months of struggle turned into years, I realized I was up against something big. When I saw my youngest child having such intense difficulty with reading and spelling, I knew that he needed something different, something brand new.
Initially, I believed that he just wasn’t trying hard enough or possibly that he didn’t really care. After all, he is a boy, and boys like to be leading and living outside discovering new adventures… not inside glued to a chair reading about them. But before long, I realized he actually was giving 100% and reading still eluded him.
I researched, investigated and implemented more programs and approaches than I’d like to admit. We even tried eye therapy. One after another… failure upon failure. But this is my son, and I KNOW he’s capable of more! (You may relate to this depth of frustration!!!) My countless tears couldn’t hide my notion of realizing that I wasn’t enough on my own. I hated the thought, but maybe he did need to go to a different schooling model. That thought only fortified my determination to press on in figuring out exactly what was holding him back.
At the perfect time, a friend alleviated some of my frustration when she suggested exploring dyslexia. A visit with a professional confirmed that dyslexia was at the core of his struggles. Now I was unstoppable! Momma-bear had an answer and it was all lining up with full clarity. Off I went researching, studying, and passionately learning all I could. Before long, I found The Barton Reading and Spelling System.
Glimpsing a brief introduction to this program described our challenges to the tee. I could see how this Orton-Gillingham based reading and spelling program was the answer to our perpetual challenges.
After about a year and a half of tutoring with The Barton System, my son could easily read words four grades above his prior level while his reading comprehension went up three and a half grades!
Being so impressed with how the Barton System transformed my family’s journey, I became a certified Barton tutor in 2015. I quickly followed this with a graduate class in dyslexia, enabling me to consult and screen for dyslexia.
My deepest passion is to help children and their families put the pieces together through education, empowerment, and empathy.

Many people see just the struggles that come with dyslexia. There are however there are many advantages: thinking outside the box, being highly creative, and entrepreneurial gifting, (just to name a few). Many parents and teachers think that the student or child at fault, but the reality is that they simply don’t have the right tools to learn in an efficient way.
